TFOS Is Asking the World to Blink: Why Complete Blinking Matters for Everyday Eye Comfort
Compartir
We first explored the foundational importance of blinking in our Original Unclog® education article, "Blinking: It’s a BIG Deal!". Recent public awareness initiatives from the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) provide a timely opportunity to revisit this essential habit with updated scientific context and a practical daily routine.
TFOS Awareness Campaign: A Global Reminder to Blink
During Dry Eye Awareness Month, TFOS launched a global campaign encouraging greater awareness of blinking habits. This awareness campaign is not a new clinical study. Its message is consistent with the broader scientific literature, including TFOS consensus reports describing the important role blinking plays in refreshing and distributing the tear film.
Screen Concentration and Incomplete Blinking
Prolonged visual concentration, including some screen-based activities, can change blink rate and increase incomplete blinking—where the upper eyelid does not fully meet the lower eyelid.
In a published clinical study, a higher proportion of participants with incomplete blinking met TFOS DEWS II dry-eye diagnostic criteria than participants without incomplete blinking. The researchers also observed differences in meibomian-gland and tear-film findings. Because this was an observational association, it does not prove that incomplete blinking alone caused dry eye.
Incorporating Complete Blinking into Your Daily Routine
Understanding the science is step one; building a simple home routine is step two. Complete blinking can be incorporated into a broader daily routine that includes appropriate eyelid hygiene and controlled warmth.
At Eye Comfort Care, we advocate for the Clean → Warm → Blink™ daily protocol:
- Clean: Gently remove daily debris and buildup from the eyelid area as directed by the product instructions or your eye care professional.
- Warm: Apply controlled, steady warmth using a thermal mask to help soften thickened meibomian gland oils.
- Blink: Follow your warming session with 10 slow, gentle, complete blinks.
How to Practice 10 Slow, Complete Blinks
After completing your warm compress session:
- Close your eyes gently and completely.
- Pause for approximately two seconds.
- Open your eyes normally.
- Repeat 10 times naturally.
Important safety reminder: Close your eyes gently. Do not squeeze forcefully, rub your eyes, push on your cheeks, or perform aggressive eyelid massage. Stop if the exercise causes pain or unusual discomfort.
Supporting the Warming Step with UNCLOGIC®.
Eye Comfort Care developed the Clean → Warm → Blink™ method to make everyday eye-comfort education easier to remember. UNCLOGIC® is our modular Thermal Eye Comfort System designed to support the warming step, with adjustable temperature settings and optional comfort accessories.
