Why Cleaning Your Eyelids and Lashes Matters More Than You Think

You brush your teeth twice a day. You wash your face. But when did you last clean your eyelids and lashes?

For most of us, the answer is never — and that’s not our fault. No one ever taught us to. Yet your lash line quietly collects oil, dead skin, makeup, and the debris of everyday life. Over time, that buildup becomes a comfortable home for Demodex — microscopic mites that live in our hair follicles. A few are normal and harmless. But when they overgrow, they can contribute to blepharitis, dryness, itching, redness, and crusty, irritated lashes.

Here’s the part most people don’t realize: those tiny crusty flakes at the base of your lashes — called collarettes — are the telltale sign. In one study of over a thousand eye care patients, nearly half of the people who had this sign had never been told they had blepharitis at all. The discomfort was there. The cause was hiding in plain sight.

The good news: a few minutes a day makes a real difference.

Eye doctors consider gentle, consistent eyelid hygiene the foundation of keeping this in check. It won’t replace your doctor’s care, but it clears away the buildup that feeds irritation — and many people feel more comfortable within a few weeks of making it a habit.

How to clean your lids gently and well

  • Use a dedicated eyelid cleanser — not just water or face wash, which aren’t made for this delicate area
  • Add a soft eyelid brush to reach along the lash line where buildup hides
  • Clean once or twice daily — morning, evening, or both
  • Most of all, be consistent. This is a small habit that rewards patience.

A gentle word: be kind to your eyes. The goal is steady, gentle cleaning — never scrubbing hard or rushing.
